2022 MAAC Esports Championship Recap

EDISON, NJ (March 23, 2022) – The 2022 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Esports Championships were held in League of Legends, Overwatch, Rocket League, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate between March 10-12.
 
After three action-packed days at The Showboat Hotel in Atlantic City, Marist College claimed victory in League of Legends and Overwatch, Iona College captured the Rocket League title and Quinnipiac University took home the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate hardware.
 
In the first championship final and second day of competition on Friday, March 11, second-seeded Iona defeated fourth-seeded Fairfield, 3-2 to claim their first Rocket League Championship in program history. Iona’s Dylan “DJ” Zerafa was named the MAAC Esports Overwatch MVP.
 
On the third and final day of the 2022 championships, Saturday, March 12, the MAAC crowned three champions in three different titles:
 
First-seeded Quinnipiac defeated second-seeded and defending champion Siena College in the first championship matchup of the day in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. This marks the first championship win in program history. Quinnipiac’s Jonathan “Bakko” Mason was named the 2022 MAAC Esports Super Smash Bros. Ultimate MVP.
 
Defending champion and First-seeded Marist defeated third-seeded Iona, 3-0 to claim the 2022 Overwatch Championship victory. Matthew “Cloud” Ong was named the 2022 MAAC Esports Overwatch Championship MVP.
 
After winning Overwatch MVP, Cloud said, “This is the biggest thing that I’ve been able to do in Esports and I didn’t think that I’d get anywhere close to this.”
 
The Red Foxes did not stop there as they turned around to capture the 2022 League of Legends Championship as well. The first-seeded Red Foxes defeated second-seeded Manhattan College, 2-0 to defend their 2020-21 crown. Athony “Cobragto” Giamo was named the 2022 MAAC League of Legends Championship MVP.
 
Marist College earned the 2022 MAAC Esports Program of the Year award after the Red Foxes took home two of the four championships. The Red Foxes are led by Assistant Athletic Director for Intramural and Club Sports Julie Byron.
