EDISON, NJ (September 13, 2022) - The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) is back for another season of esports competition for all 11 member schools, with a new gaming organizer and tournament management partner, eFuse.
“eFuse has developed a conference-wide approach to help the MAAC organize and grow our esports programs by providing a structure and promotion platform that we think can become the industry standard,” said Canisius Director of Athletics Bill Maher. “As the MAAC membership continues to grow with the evolution of campus-based esports programs, we believe this partnership will position the MAAC to capitalize on this growing market for new students.”
Starting October 4th, MAAC schools will compete in popular esports titles, Super Smash Bros., Rocket League, and Valorant. Rocket League and Super Smash Bros. return for the third year, with the addition of Valorant being new to competitive offerings for MAAC esports. Super Smash Bros. competition will occur on Tuesday nights, UltimateRocket League on Wednesday nights, and Valorant on Friday nights. The matches will be default start at 7:00 PM ET, however, schools have the ability to compete between the matchup window of 5:00 PM ET - 10:00 PM ET. Each game title features a round-robin style season in which each team will play a new school each week, with the addition of a makeup week added into the schedule to accommodate any matches that may have needed rescheduling. The Fall season will wrap up on December 9th, with the Spring Season kicking off in mid-January featuring competitions in Overwatch, League of Legends, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
The MAAC has been competing in esports competitions since 2020 and last year hosted the 2022 MAAC Esports Championship in Atlantic City for the first time. Last year’s champions were:
· Rocket League - Iona
· Overwatch - Marist
· League of Legends - Marist
· Super Smash Bros. - Quinnipiac
The MAAC is working with eFuse to handle its esports operations, league management, and creative/content offerings. The competition will be operated through eFuse’s eRena platform which is used to host tournaments from scholastic events to sponsored influencer or publisher events with high-profile content creators and brands. eFuse has a large presence in the collegiate esports ecosystem after acquisitions of the College CoD League and College Carball Association.
Additionally, eFuse is partnered with the Esports Collegiate Conference (ESC) which is a separate venture and conference overseen by the Mid-American Conference. The ESC features 14 midwestern-based member schools.
“Collegiate esports is a core focus of the eFuse ecosystem and we can't wait to work with the MAAC to help elevate the competitive experience for all Directors, Coaches, and Players involved. These schools and players are the future of the esports industry and we couldn't be more excited to help them change their lives through gaming.” - Matthew Benson, Co-Founder & CEO of eFuse
The streaming schedule of where and when to view each broadcasted matchup will be provided at a later date.
