EDISON, NJ (March 12, 2023) – The 2023 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Esports Championships were held in League of Legends, Overwatch, Rocket League, Valorant and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate between March 9th-11th.
After three great days of competition at The Showboat Hotel in Atlantic City, Quinnipiac University took home the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate & Valorant hardware. Fairfield captured the Rocket League title, Iona University won League of Legends and with their first appearance in the MAAC Esports Championships Mount St. Mary’s left with the Overwatch title.
In the first championship final Quinnipiac and Siena battled as the 1 & 2 seeds respectively. Quinnipiac repeated as champions with Jonathan “Bakko” Mason leading the way with an impressive performance which led to MVP honors in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The Bobcats also claimed the first ever Valorant championship defeating Marist to secure the title. Javier "Torn" Flores had a strong performance which led to an MVP award.
Mount St. Mary’s participating in their first ever MAAC Esports championship was the No. 1 seed coming into the finals. Mount defeated the defending 2-time champion and No.2 seed Marist to claim the Overwatch title. Brady “Zerial” Klodaski took home the MVP trophy.
The Stags of Fairfield led by MVP Matthew "Matter" Baker defeated last years champions Iona University in a 7 game series to take home the 2023 Rocket League crown.
In the 5th and final championship Manhattan and Iona battled for the League of Legends title. In an intense matchup Iona pulled away to win the best of 3 series to claim the 2023 League of Legends championship. Eric “Diagram” Lui helped lead Iona to victory and won MVP for his efforts.
Marist College earned the 2023 MAAC Esports Program of the Year award for a 2nd year in a row after an impressive regular season. The Red Foxes are led by Assistant Athletic Director for Intramural and Club Sports Julie Byron.
