Rider Wins the 2023 MAAC Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Championship


Emmitsburg, MD (May 7, 2023) – Rider University clinched the 2023 MAAC Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship at Morgan Track in Emmitsburg, Maryland. The Broncs never relinquished the lead following day one of the meet, finishing with a team score of 210, securing another title for the program joining their 2013 trophy.

After claiming just one gold medal on the opening day of the meet, Rider snagged 7 first place finishes on the final day of action, helping propel the Broncs to the team title. Rider’s first gold was secured by Noah Lawson in the discus throw, when he topped the field with a distance of 45.61 meters. In the 200, Artie Burgess finished with a new MAAC record 20.97 to clinch the team’s second first place of the day. Burgess was not finished as he also earned the 100 -meter crown finishing with a time of 10.61 The Broncs fourth gold medal was garnered by Jayden DuBard, who tossed a MAAC-best 17.21 meters in the shot put.
 
MAAC runner-up and host, Mount St. Mary’s, displayed an impressive performance, winning 4 total golds on Sunday. In track events, the Mount had Richard Gilchrist (110m hurdles) and Justyn Seivright 400m hurdles) both became MAAC champions, while Dylan LaNoue secured two gold medals in both the triple and high jump events.
 
Iona finished with two golds, ending their tournament with a third -place finish. The Gaels clinched a pair of distance races, winning the 1500 (Matt Rankin) while Mael Gouyette became a MAAC record holder finishing the 5000 -meter run in 14:09.98.

*Broken MAAC Records
  • Mount St. Mary’s Richard Gilchrist broke the MAAC record in the men’s 110 meter hurdles with a finishing time of 13.95, breaking the previous record  (David Hightower, Rider 14.24, 2013).
  • Saint Peter’s Cahshieve Blair beat the MAAC record in the men’s 400 meter dash, crossing the finish line in 47.58 to break the previous record by .18 (Ben Boyd, Monmouth, 47.76 2015)
  • Iona’s Mael Gouyette broke the MAAC record in the men’s 5000 meter run with a time of 14:09.98 beatin g the previous record by 14 seconds (Matthew Gillespie, Iona 2015)
  • Rider’s Artie Burgess broke the 200 meter men’s outdoor record with a time 20.97 beating last years record of 21.02 (Glenmour Leonard-Osbourne, Marist 2022)
