EDISON, NJ (Jan. 17, 2024) – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) has announced the 2024 Preseason Coaches’ Polls for men’s and women’s tennis, as voted on by the league's head coaches. Fairfield University was selected as the men’s preseason top choice and Quinnipiac University was unanimously chosen as the women’s preseason selection.
2023 runner-up, the Stags garnered 46 points to lead the men’s poll, receiving five first-place votes. One of three teams to earn a share of the 2023 Regular Season Championship, Fairfield won its second regular season crown last season, while the program owns five men’s tennis championships dating back to 1991, last claiming the team title in 2012. Despite not winning a MAAC title in over a decade, the Stags have qualified for eight out of 10 championships since 2012 and have played in the championship final a trio of times, in 2013, 2020-21, and 2023.
Quinnipiac University, who also earned a share of the 2023 Regular Season title, was tabbed second behind Fairfield, receiving 43 points and the remaining two first-place votes. Marist College was picked third with 32 votes, while Niagara University (25) and defending MAAC Champions, Siena College (24) rounded out the top five.
Back-to-back defending MAAC Champions, Quinnipiac, once again was the unanimous favorite in the women’s poll, earning all seven first-place votes for a total of 49 points. The Bobcats won their seventh overall MAAC Championship title and ninth straight MAAC Regular Season Championship in 2023, since joining the MAAC in 2013-14. Quinnipiac has compiled a dominating 60-1 MAAC regular season record over the timespan and has made it to the championship final in all nine seasons that the Bobcats have been in the MAAC, finishing as the runner-up in 2019 and 2020-21, the only two seasons the team failed to win it all.
2023 runner-up Fairfield was chosen second in the poll, earning 42 points, while 2023 semifinalists, Siena (30) and Mount St. Mary’s (23), were selected third and fourth, respectively.
