2024 MAAC Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Day One Recap

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ (May 4, 2024) – Opening day action at the 2024 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Championships concluded today with the Manhattan men’s program and Rider women’s program sitting atop of the team leaderboards.

Mount St. Mary’s started strong in the afternoon’s field events, winning three of the first four gold medals awarded and four of the eight total field events. Mountaineer freshman Lorelai Paxton won the women’s javelin with a personal-best throw of 40.43 meters, while fellow freshman Justin Sluijter completed the Mount sweep of the javelin in the men’s event with his own personal-best of 59.61 meters. The Mountaineers also swept the pole vault, with junior Arran Fahey clearing 4.90 meters to win the men’s event and sophomore Emelie Beckman clearing 3.70 meters to win the women’s event.
 
Manhattan College traditionally has success in the throws, but added a gold medal in the women’s 10,000 meters thanks to a championship-record performance from graduate student Andria Scaglione, who crossed the line in 35:11.23 to take the title. The Jaspers swept the women’s hammer throw, with 2023 MAAC Outdoor most-outstanding performer Kristin Stickdorn once again winning the event with a top throw of 59.53 meters. Senior RJ Decker repeated in the men’s hammer throw to highlight a Jaspers team that had four of the top five finishers in the event.
 
Rider junior Mariah Stephens had a busy day on the track, winning the women’s long jump in between qualifying in first for the women’s 100-meters hurdles and 100-meter dash. She was one of two Broncs who took home a MAAC title on the opening day, joined by senior Zach Manorowitz, who completed Rider’s sweep of the long jump with a 7.42-meter winning tally in the men’s event.
 
The Siena Saints reigned supreme in the 3000-meter steeplechase, with fifth-year Tommy Anderson crossing the line first in the men’s event with a time of 9:09.11, while graduate student Madeleine Hesler won the women’s event by more than 11 seconds by finishing in 11 minutes flat.
 
The Iona Gaels added a new name to its distance dynasty, as sophomore Scott Fagan stormed to a conference title in the men’s 10,000 meters with a winning time of 30:38.74.
