MAAC Institutions Continue to Achieve Academic Success as the Annual NCAA APR Report Celebrates its 20th Anniversary

EDISON, NJ (June 4, 2024) – Amid the rapidly evolving college athletics landscape, Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) student-athletes continue to excel in the classroom at high rates. Today the NCAA announced the latest four-year Academic Progress Rates (APR) and 34 MAAC teams achieved perfect APR scores (1,000) – 24 women’s and 10 men’s. Nine league sports saw an increase in their average rate from the 2021-22 report, while 14 MAAC sports posted rates above or equal to the national average (984).

According to the 2022-23 data, Fairfield University led all MAAC institutions with nine teams earning a perfect mark. Marist College followed with six teams recording perfect scores. Two conference schools recorded three flawless scores and they included Quinnipiac University and Siena College. Canisius University, Iona University, Mount St. Mary’s University, and Rider University registered two teams with a score of 1,000, while Niagara University had one squad with a perfect tally. A quartet of associate member teams achieved perfect scores additionally, which featured Dayton University (Women’s Golf), Jacksonville University (Women’s Rowing), Loyola University Chicago (Women’s Golf), and Villanova University (Women’s Water Polo).

For the third consecutive year since the APR returned, women's lacrosse had the highest MAAC multiyear average at 994. The largest improvement on the women’s side and in the MAAC, were basketball and swimming and diving at plus five, while men’s golf (+4) had the highest improvement on the men's side. Additionally, women’s basketball APR score of 987, ranked tied for 11th nationally. Overall, the MAAC’s four-year average decreased by one from last year’s report, dropping to 983, which ranked tied for 18th nationally amongst the other 32 Division I conferences.

The APR, created to provide more of real-time measurement of academic success than graduation success rates offer, is a team-based metric where scholarship student-athletes earn one point each term for remaining eligible and one point for staying in school or graduating. Schools that don't offer scholarships track their recruited student-athletes. The multiyear APR reflects NCAA Division I APR data submitted by schools for the 2019-20 through 2022-23 academic years.
