WEST WINDSOR, NJ (Apr. 26, 2025) – No. 1 Quinnipiac University and No. 6 Rider University picked up wins during the semifinal round of the 2025 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Men’s Tennis Championship on Saturday morning at Mercer County Park Tennis Center in West Windsor, NJ. The Bobcats defeated No. 5 Niagara University, 4-1, and the Broncs upset No. 2 Siena College 4-3, to advance into the championship final.

Defending MAAC Champions and top seeded Quinnipiac kept its title defense alive, taking down No. 5 Niagara, 4-1 to begin the day. Action began in entertaining fashion as the last two doubles matches each came down to a tiebreak. At the #2 spot, Quinnipiac’s James Lorenzetti and Daniel Velek made quick work of Niagara’s Mikolaj Kowal and Gurustat Singh Makkar, 6-1. With the #1 and #2 doubles matches tight, Niagara prevailed at the topflight and evened up doubles following a 7-6 (7-1) win by Tanner Bedard and Vid Maric over Finn Burridge and Carlos Braun Simo. The doubles point clincher came down to a 7-6 (7-1) victory for the Bobcat’s Alex Yang and Elias Hoxha over the Purple Eagle’s Trevor Masi and Jose Maria Garcia Uribe at the #3 spot. In singles, Quinnipiac extended its lead to a dominating 3-0 advantage with wins at positions #4 and #5. At #4, Elias Hoxha quickly took down Mikolaj Kowal, 6-1 6-0. Then at #5, Vishal Prakash beat Jose Maria Garcia Uribe, 6-3 6-4. Niagara avoided the sweep, picking up a win at the #2 position, when Trevor Masi defeated Finn Burridge, 7-6 6-2. The match clinching point was decided at the #3 singles slot, where Quinnipiac’s Carlos Braun Simo topped Niagara’s Vid Maric, 7-5 7-5, putting the Bobcats back in the championship final for the second straight season. Overall, the Bobcats will be competing for the championship crown for the fifth time, having won it all just once last year in 2024.

No. 6 Rider’s Cinderella run continued as the Broncs pulled out a 4-3 comeback victory over No. 2 Siena in the second semifinal match of the day. Rider began the match with a 1-0 lead after taking the doubles point. Siena captured #3 doubles with a 6-2 win by Maxwell Acri and Bruno Loch Varella over Cooper Dillon and Axel Engstrom. The Broncs would rally back and take #1 and #2 doubles in order, to clinch the point. At #1, Dhruv Tangri and Matteus Froberg Dahlin topped Oscar Martinez and Emilio Zavala Salinas, 6-2, followed by #2 where Roger Pelaez Martinez and Cole Thurgur beat Dylan Breen and Fabio Varella, 6-1. In singles, the Saints would battle back and snag the first two points, to go ahead 2-1. First, Siena’s Oscar Martinez defeated Rider’s Dhruv Tangri, 6-2 6-2. Then at the #6 position, Emilio Zavala Salinas beat Giacomo Ghitti, in straight sets, 6-3 6-2. Rider would respond and tie the match at 2-2, by way of a 6-3 6-1 triumphed at the #5 spot with Axel Engstrom defeating Dylan Breen. The back-and-forth battled continued with both teams securing one of the next two points, knotting the match at 3-3. Rider struck first winning #2 singles (Matteus Froberg Dahlin d. Fabio Varella, 6-3 6-1) and then Siena answered by winning #4 singles (Bruno Loch Varella d. Nathan Slattery, 7-5 6-4). The deciding match would be #3 singles, which ended up being a three-set thriller. Siena’s Maxwell Acri took the first set, 7-6 (8-6), but Rider’s Cole Thurgur would storm back to win the second set 6-3 and the third and final set 6-2 to clinch the match and team victory for the Broncs. After securing the program’s first ever MAAC postseason win in the first round, Rider now makes its program’s first trip in the championship final. As the sixth seeded team, the Broncs also become the lowest seed in MAAC tennis history (men or women) to earn a berth in the championship final – No. 3 was the previous low.
The 2025 MAAC Men's Tennis Championship final will take place tomorrow, Sunday April 27 at 10:00 a.m., with the winner earning the league’s automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
