EMMITSBURG, MD (May 4, 2025) – No. 2 Fairfield University claimed the 2025 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Women’s Lacrosse Championship crown live on ESPNU Sunday afternoon, inside of Waldron Family Stadium in Emmitsburg, Maryland. The Stags defeated No. 4 Iona University, 12-7, winning the program’s MAAC-leading ninth championship title.

Fairfield controlled the contest through the first 30 minutes, outscoring Iona 5-2. The Stags went a perfect 3-for-3 in the first period, connecting on all their shots on goal, and used a 4-0 run between the end of the first and start of the second to get out to the three-goal lead at the half. The Stags stifling defense held the Gaels to just a pair of goals and Fairfield keeper, Keira Furey, made seven saves in the first half. In the third frame, Fairfield turned up the attack, scoring six total goals in the quarter, while only giving up one goal. Amanda Kozak led the way in the period, scoring two of the goals, while Grace Slater added one of her own to earn a hat trick in the game. Fairfield led 11-3 through three in the game. Despite trailing by eight goals, Iona fought back in the final period. After only scoring three total goals (one goal in each of the first three quarters), the Gaels stormed out of the final break by scoring four straight goals, cutting the deficit to 11-7. Four separate Gaels logged goals during the rally, with Calen Norton, Kacie Scarduzio, Kira Varada, and Kate Kruegar each scoring. Although the Gaels put up a valiant comeback effort, it was too little too late, as the Stags held on to win 12-7.
Fairfield Notes and Notables
- Kozak led the team in points for the second straight postseason game, leading to championship Most Outstanding Player honors.
- She finished with a game-high of six points, scoring two goals and handing out a team-high four assists in the win.
- Slater recorded her second straight hat trick of the tournament, scoring a team-best three goals on three shot attempts.
- Tessa Caputo also logged three points, dishing out a pair of assists and scoring one goal.
- Kelly Haggerty put together a two-point day behind a pair of goals, while also picking up two ground balls.
- Four other Fairfield players tallied one goal each in the victory – Brooke Marotti, Haley Burns, Kit Zanelli, and Katelyn Greeley.
- Leading Fairfield in draw controls, was Brynn Donnelly, with her game-high nine draw controls.
- Earning the win in goal was Furey who made nine saves and scooped up a team-high of six ground balls.
- Fairfield had the edge in shots (27-26) and shots on goal (18-16).
- The Stags also scooped up more ground balls (26-21), won the draw controls battle (15-7), and had more saves (9-6).
- Fairfield wins its sixth title over the past seven seasons and has now won a MAAC-leading nine women’s lacrosse championships in total.
- The Stags clinched a seventh consecutive NCAA postseason berth – ninth overall since 2009 – which included the first-ever at-large bid in MAAC women's lacrosse history in 2024.
Iona Notes and Notables
- Iona was led offensively by Kruegar’s three points, scoring two goals and one assist.
- Norton and Varada were second on the squad in points, both recording two apiece.
- Norton finished with one point and one assist.
- Varada once again had an all-around game, scoring two goals, picking up four ground balls, and causing two turnovers.
- Victoria Curreri picked up six ground balls and had five caused turnovers to lead the Gaels in both categories.
- In net for Iona was Ava Giugliano who made six saves and scooped up two ground balls.
- Iona recorded more caused turnovers (14-9) additionally.
- Despite not winning the championship, the Gaels had a successful 2025 postseason run, winning the program’s first ever tournament games and making their first-ever MAAC Championship final.
Championship Game Notes
- The 2025 MAAC Women's Lacrosse Championship final aired live nationally on ESPNU for the first time in league history.
- The seven goals allowed by Fairfield was tied for the third lowest by the Stags in their nine championship wins.
- Fairfield becomes the second MAAC program in league history to win six championships over a seven year span, joining Canisius who achieved the feat from 2011 through 2017.
Fairfield earns the MAAC automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division I Women’s Lacrosse Championship. The Stags will find out their opponent during the Division I Women’s Lacrosse Selection Show on ESPNU tonight at 9:00 p.m.
