POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (Apr. 28, 2023) – Long Island University and Iona University advance to the semifinal round of the 2023 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Water Polo Championship held at Marist’s, McCann Natatorium.

2023 MAAC Water Polo Championship-Opening Round
McCann Natatorium | Marist College
In the first opening round game of the 2023 MAAC Water Polo Championship, No. 3 LIU defeated No.6 La Salle by a score of 9-6. LIU will move on to the semifinal round tomorrow to face No. 2 Marist at 4pm.
LIU Notes
-LIU led La Salle in shots on goal by a margin of 22-13.
-Paola Dominguez-Castro recorded three goals in the game.
-Elena Camarena scored two goals in the contest for the Sharks.
-Julia Zebak recorded five saves with a .455 save percentage.
-LIU improves to 21-12 on the season and will take on top seed Wagner tomorrow at 1pm.
La Salle Notes
-Sophie Appler recorded two goals on five shot attempts.
- Madelyn Koerper scored two goals on two shot attempts.
- Emma Gurasich recorded eight saves and had a .471 save percentage.
-La Salle finishes the season with an overall record of 16-16.

No.4 Iona defeated No.5 Mount St. Mary’s 11-8 in the second opening round matchup of the 2023 MAAC Water Polo Championship. Iona will advance to tomorrow’s semifinal round where they will take on No.1 Wagner at 1pm.
Iona Notes
-Iona led Mount St. Mary’s 29-19 in shots on goal.
-Jordan van Reeken recorded four goals on eight shots on goal to lead Iona.
-Lilly Morris totaled five saves and recorded a .385 save percentage on the day.
-Amelia Gonzalez scored three goals in the match.
-Iona advances to the semifinal round of the 2023 MAAC Water Polo Championship with an overall record of 17-12.
Mount St. Mary’s Notes
- Annefleur ten Bloemendal and Anna Kegel led Mount St. Mary’s with 3 goals each in the contest.
-Mount St. Mary’s held a 3-2 lead at the end of the second period.
-Pip Piper recorded nine saves and had a .450 save percentage for The Mount.
-Mount St. Mary’s finishes the season with a record of 15-11.
