BUFFALO, NY (May. 10, 2023) – The 2023 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Softball Championship began on Wednesday, May 10 at Canisius College’s Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, NY. The first day of competition featured No.3 Marist College, No. 4 Fairfield University, No. 5 Siena College and No. 6 Iona University.

2023 MAAC Softball Championship- Day 1
The MAAC Softball Championship kicked off at 11am with No. 3 Marist taking on No. 6 Iona.
Marist picked up a 2-1 win over Iona to advance to the next round of competition. No. 3 Marist will face No. 2 Mount St. Mary’s on Thursday, May 11 at 11am.
Marist notes
-Marist went up 2-0 in the first inning, off a 2-run homerun by MAAC Player of the Year Maddie Pleasants.
-Marist ended up defeating No. 6 Iona 2-1.
-Calista Phippen totaled five strike outs in the first 3.2 innings of the game.
-Kiley Myers allowed two hits in 3.1 innings pitched and recorded two strikeouts.
-The Red Foxes will face No. 2 Mount St. Mary’s tomorrow at 11am in the first game of day 2 of competition.
Iona Notes
-Iona went scoreless in the first three innings.
-The Gaels got on the board in the 4
th inning, on a Kayla Haywood RBI.
-Kara Zazzaro pitched a complete game, recording seven strikeouts and allowing just two hits.
-Kayla Haywood drove in the lone run for Iona in the contest.
-With the loss the Gaels are moved to the elimination bracket, where they were matched with the losing team from the Fairfield and Siena game.

2023 MAAC Softball Championship- Day 1
In the second opening round game of the 2023 Softball Championship, No.4 Fairfield defeated No.5 Siena. Fairfield picked up its third win over Siena this season and will advance in the winner’s bracket of the 2023 MAAC Softball Championship, where they will next face top seed Canisius at 1:30pm.
Fairfield Notes
- The Stags would score two runs in the second inning to go up 2-0.
- Haley Updegraff recorded a 2-run homerun in the third inning to put the Stags up 4-0.
-Allie Bridgeman and Alyssa Weinberg handled the pitching duties for Fairfield in the win.
-Kaitlin Hoffman led The Stags with three hits and an RBI.
-Fairfield advances to the next round where they will square off with No. 1 Canisius at 1:30pm on 5/11.
Siena Notes
-Ashley Giampolo hit a two-run homerun in the sixth inning to bring the Saints within one run.
-Isabella Pardo recorded three hits in four at bats for the Saints.
- The Saints moved to the elimination bracket with the loss to Fairfield where they faced No. 6.

2023 MAAC Softball Championship- Day 1
In the first elimination game of the 2023 MAAC Softball Championship, No.6 Iona took down No. 5 Siena to keep their season alive. Iona would take down the Saints in eight innings by a score of 4-1. The Gaels next opponent will be the losing team from game four of the 2023 MAAC Softball Championship between No. 2 Mount St. Mary’s and No. 3 Marist.
Siena Notes
-Siena got on the scoreboard in the sixth inning to tie the game at 1-1.
-Alissa Eimont pitched a complete game, recording three strikeouts.
-Ashley Giampolo recorded two hits for the Saints in the contest.
-Siena finishes the season with an overall record of 32-21, the second consecutive 30-win season for the Saints.
Iona Notes
-Iona took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning.
- The game went to extra innings after being tied 1-1 at the end of seven.
-The Gaels would score three unanswered runs in the eighth inning to bring in the win.
-Kaylin Flukey would record a two-run single to give The Gaels a three-run lead in the final inning.
-Samantha Riebc recorded five strikeouts in 5.0 innings pitched.
- Iona moves on to the next round of the elimination bracket and will play either No. 2 Mount St. Mary’s or No.3 Marist on 5/11 at 4pm.
