Iona Wins 34th Consecutive MAAC Men’s Cross Country Championship

MONTGOMERY, NY (Nov. 2, 2024) – Iona University captured its NCAA record 34th-straight Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Men’s Cross Country Championship on Saturday, November 2 at Twin Ponds on the Farm in Montgomery, New York.
 
Leading the Gaels was 2024 Men’s Most Outstanding Runner and individual champion, Lachlan Wellington, who paced Iona with a MAAC Championship course record finishing time of 23:57.4 on the 8K course. Wellington became Iona’s 24th consecutive individual champion dating back to 2002.
  
Iona secured the top six spots and 11 out of the top-15 positions, garnering a perfect team score of 15 and the programs’ 39th total title since the inaugural MAAC championship in 1981. Wellington was joined in the top-six by teammates, silver medalist Matt Rankin (23:57.6), bronze medalist Aiden Coles (23:57.8), Tristan Coles in fourth-place (24:05.6), Tadhg Donnelly in fifth-place (24:10.5), and Nick Soldevere (24:10.6) in sixth-place.
 
The 2024 Men’s Cross Country Rookie of the Year was Bradley Giblin from Iona. Giblin placed ninth overall, crossing the finish line in 24:17.5. Along with Giblin, members of the All-Rookie Team featured, Peter Fogarty of Iona, Sean Moore from Merrimack, and the Siena duo of Collin Brown and Colin Brunelle.

Postseason competition continues on Friday, November 15 at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship which takes place at Hopkinton State Fairgrounds Cross Country Course, Hopkinton, New Hampshire. The NCAA Division I Cross Country Men's and Women's Selection show will air live on ncaa.com on Saturday November 15 at 5:00 p.m. The NCAA Division I Championship will take place November 23 at Thomas Zimmer Championship Course, in Verona, Wisconsin.
