Iona MXC Earns Automatic Berth to NCAA Championship with Runner-Up Regional Finish

CONTOOCOOK, NH - Racing at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships at the Hopkinton State Fairgrounds, hosted by Boston College, the Iona University men's cross country program delivered a strong postseason statement. The Gaels placed second overall among the 38 teams in the 10k regional, securing an automatic bid to the 2025 NCAA Championship next Saturday in Columbia, Missouri.
 
The result marks Iona's second NCAA Championship appearance in the last three seasons, following the Gaels' 2023 regional title. Three Iona runners earned All-Region honors by placing inside the top 25.

IONA PERFORMERS

Iona placed six competitors across the finish line with the top five contributing to the team score. Junior Duncan Robinson led the Gaels with a fourth-place individual finish in 29:19.9, securing All-Region honors and delivering an important low score. Senior Matt Rankin followed with a composed effort in his final regional appearance, placing 13th in 29:31.9 and collecting All-Region recognition. Sophomore Bradley Giblin added a third All-Region performance for the Gaels by finishing 18th in 29:50.0. Sophomore Oliver Boltz provided strong depth as Iona's fourth scorer, crossing 29th in 30:15.9, and junior Baptiste Cartieaux completed the scoring five in 31st place with a 30:17.4 finish. Sophomore Conan Harper rounded out the Gaels' lineup in 51st place with a time of 30:33.5.

THE RACE FIELD

The individual race featured a competitive front pack throughout the 10k. Hofstra freshman Fredrick Kipkosgei claimed the individual title in 29:12.7. Syracuse senior Peter Walsdorf followed in second place with a time of 29:17.5. Harvard junior Sam Burgess placed third in 29:18.6, while Iona junior Duncan Robinson finished close behind in fourth place with a mark of 29:19.9. Harvard freshman Tam Gavenas completed the top five in 29:21.2.

TEAM SCORES

Iona entered the meet ranked No. 3 in the Northeast Region and exceeded that projection by finishing second to secure an automatic berth to the NCAA Championship. Syracuse won the team title with 32 points and placed four runners inside the top eight. Iona followed with 95 points behind three All-Region performances and held off Harvard, which placed third with 105 points. Providence was fourth with 169 points and Yale finished fifth with 170. Army took sixth, UMass Lowell seventh, host Boston College eighth, Cornell ninth, and Hofstra rounded out the top ten.
