Canisius and Sacred Heart Earn Wins in the 2025 Women’s Soccer First Round Powered by Beef

EDISON, NJ (Nov. 2, 2025) – The 2025 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Women’s Soccer Championship First Round action concluded on Sunday with No. 3 Canisius University beating No. 6 Marist University and No. 4 Sacred Heart University defeating No. 5 Siena University.

No. 4 Sacred Heart (10-8-1) topped No. 5 Siena (9-5-6) 2-1 in the first-round on Sunday afternoon in Fairfield, CT. 

The Saints jumped out to an early 1-0 lead within the first minute of action when Brianna Neary put the ball into the bottom right side corner of the goal. She was assisted by teammates Catherine Rogers and Cate Flanagan. During the 7th and 35th minute of the game, Siena’s Cate Burns saved two goals but was unable to save first year Riley Pettigrew of Sacred Heart’s shot tying up the score at 1-1 during the 25th minute. Sacred Heart was able to start off the second half with a save in the 47th minute of the game by goalkeeper, Kyran Thievon. In the 85th minute of action, Pettigrew scored the game-winning tally – her second goal of the meeting – giving the Pioneers a 2-1 edge and ultimately leading the team into the semifinal round of the championship.  

Sacred Heart Notes and Notables 

  • The Pioneers had the advantage in shots on goal (6-4). 

  • Pettigrew scored both goals for the Pioneers, finding the back of the net on her two shots on goal. 

  • Morgan Bovardi contributed two of the eleven shots in the game. 

  • Shea Kellher had the only assist of the game. 

  • Forward, Lindsay McShea led the Pioneers with three shots and two shots on goal. 

  • Sacred Heart beat Siena in both meetings this season, including the regular season. 

  • Sacred Heart will advance to the semifinals for the first time since joining the MAAC. 

Siena Notes and Notables 

  • Neary led the Saints with four shots, two shots on goal, and the only goal for Siena. 

  • Rogers and Flanagan each logged an assist in the game. 

  • Burns made four saves in the losing effort. 

  • Lindsey Harrington contributed two of the four shots on goal for the Saints. 

  • Siena out shot Sacred Heart (15-11) and recorded more corner kicks (4-3).

No. 3 Canisius (8-8-1) edged No. 6 Marist (6-8-5) 1-0 in Buffalo, NY on Sunday afternoon in their first round matchup. 

 
Canisius had three unsuccessful shots in the first half before scoring the matches’ only goal in the 20th minute. The goal came courtesy of a bicycle kick feed into the box by Skylar Cornell to Azaria Fagan who scored on a header into the bottom left corner.  

Canisius Notes and Notables 

  • Fagan’s tally was her fifth goal of the season. 

  • Jessica Whitaker and midfielder Lizzy Harkness of Canisius led the team with three shots and one shots on goal, respectively. 

  • Canisius had the advantage in shots, 9-4 and shots on goal, 4-3. 

  • Canisius had the advantage in corner kicks, 3-1. 

  • This was the fourth shutout of the season for the team. 

  • Meghan Joerger and Cornell each recorded an assist on the game-winning goal. 

  • Goalkeeper Chloe Tseros, had three saves in the clean sheet victory, playing in all 90 minutes of action.  

  • This is the second year in a row Canisius is making it into the semifinal round of the MAAC Championship. 

Marist Notes and Notables 

  • Gabby Tirado led Marist with three shots and one shot on goal. 

  • Logging one shot each for Marist wereAnna Maggi, Mia Katchouni, Olivia Lindsay, and Margaret Johnson. 

  • Goalkeeper, Maddy Catalanotti made three saves in the contest. 

The semifinal round of the 2025 Women’s Soccer Championship will take place on Thursday, November 6. Sacred Heart will face No. 1 Fairfield in the semifinals in Fairfield, CT. Canisius will face No. 2 Quinnipiac in the semis in Hamden, CT.
