Iona’s Gunton and Sacred Heart’s Hayes Named Bob McCloskey Insurance MAAC Student-Athletes of the Week

Hayes competed in the Wagner Seahawk Shootout at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Friday and emerged victorious in the 600 meters with a 1:20.82 clocking.  Not only did the redshirt senior best a field of 67 entries, but he also broke his own school record in the event by more than a second.  Hayes set his old record of 1:21.90 in last year's Seahawk Shootout.

Senior Tayla Gunton opened the 2025–26 indoor season with a historic performance, setting a new Iona University women’s 5,000-meter record at the BU Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener. Competing as the Gaels’ lone entrant, Gunton ran 16:00.63, shattering her personal best by nearly 50 seconds and breaking the previous school record of 16:01.28 set in 2006. She finished just 0.63 seconds shy of becoming the program’s first sub-16 performer.
