GENEVA, OH (Feb. 14, 2025) – The 2025 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Men’s and Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships continued Friday at SPIRE Academy in Geneva, Ohio, with a record day, as 10 MAAC Championship records were broken during the day, the most ever in recent conference history. On the team standings, Niagara University remained atop of both the men’s and women’s charts at the conclusion of the night.
Of the 10 MAAC Championship records broken on the day, seven records fell during the night session of the championships, while three were broken during the morning prelims session. To start the night off, Hope Ivanovich from Siena College took gold and broke the MAAC Championship record in the women’s 100 Butterfly, in a time of 54.49. The mark was 0.14 faster than her record mark of 54.63, which she set during the prelims. After three races without records, the next four straight events would all result in MAAC Championship records. The second MAAC Championship record to topple during the night cap came in the women’s 200 Freestyle, when Niagara’s Natalie Killion finished in a record time of 1:48.20, beating out the old record of 1:48.58, which she also set during the morning prelims. For the second year in a row, Iona University’s Michael Faughnan would earn the top spot and break the men's 200 Freestyle MAAC Championship record, finishing at 1:34.39, edging his record from 2024 that he set in 1:34.79. In the very next race, Fairfield Tone Sandsjoe also set the new MAAC benchmark while defending her title in the women's 100 Breaststroke, swimming a record time of 1:00.61, beating her 1:01.45 record time from a year ago. The final individual MAAC Championship record would be earned by Aidan Grady from Mount St. Mary’s University, swimming a 53.18 in the men’s 100 Breaststroke. The gold medal time by Grady broke the previous record set by FuKang Wong of Bryant in 2020 (53.40).
The two relay races also ended with shattered records. First, the women’s 400 Medley Relay championship record would be set by Niagara’s quarter of Killion, Alaina Pitton, Maria Mitova, and Paige South in 3:42.93, breaking Fairfield’s record of 3:44.67 that was set last year. Lastly, the men’s 400 Medley Relay team of Iona’s Faughnan, Matthew Loftus, Kieran Egan, and Nate Wale would secure the gold in a championship record time of 3:11.51, breaking the prior record of 3:13.39 that Bryant set back in 2019. This was the second straight year Iona won gold in this event, with Faughnan, Loftus, and Egan all being members of last year’s unit.
Other winners on the night were, Fairfield University’s Chris Dauser taking the individual title in the men’s 100 Butterfly with a time of 47.57. In the women’s 400 IM, Niagara’s Chloe Vlaeminck came in first place, beating out the rest of the pack with a 4:20.87 time, while Marist University’s James Conable took gold for the third straight year in the men’s 400 IM, touching the wall in 3:50.44 this time around. The final two individual gold medalists on the night included Fairfield’s Erini Pappas, securing the victory in the women’s 100 Backstroke in 55.44 and Iona’s Kieran Egan in the men’s 100 Backstroke, winning with a time of 47.75.
The meet’s only diving event of the night featured the men’s 3-Meter Dive. Stavros Xantheas from Rider scored a 316.35 to claim the top position on the podium.
