Niagara and Siena Victorious in First Round of 2025 MAAC Women’s Tennis Championship

WEST WINDSOR, NJ (Apr. 25, 2025) – No. 3 Niagara University and No. 5 Siena College were triumphed at the 2025 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Women’s Tennis Championship First Round on Friday afternoon at Mercer County Park Tennis Center in West Windsor, NJ. Niagara topped No. 6 Marist University 4-2, and Siena eliminated No. 4 Rider University 4-1, to advance into the championship semifinal round.

No. 3 Niagara won a tightly contested first round meeting against No. 6 Marist, 4-2 to start the afternoon. The Purple Eagles opened the match by stealing the doubles point, 2-1 with victories at the #1 and #2 positions. Niagara claimed a 6-2 win at #2, led by Valeria Margarita Mora Alvarez and Larisa Kotok beating Caterina Assi and Vihana Shresta. Marist took #3 doubles 6-4, by way of a win from Viktoria Lorentzon and Ellen Zureick defeating Saloni Tamang and Mercedes Velasco Mencos. The doubles point was clinched at the #1 spot, when Niagara’s Isabel Carolina Garcia Torra and Maria Melo toppled Lola Ungerman and Cloe Clements, 6-3. In singles, the teams alternated wins, pushing the match to a 2-2 tie with three matches completed. Marist won at the #6 position behind a 6-1 6-1 victory from Ella Lindsey over Mercedes Velasco Mencos, to make the match even at 1-1. The Purple Eagles regained the lead following a #4 singles win by Andriana Zaphiris over Saloni Tamang, 6-4 6-1. The Red Foxes once again responded, this time winning at the #5 slot, by way of a 6-3 6-0 victory from Vihana Shresta over Valeria Margarita Mora Alvarez, knotting the contest at 2-2. Niagara would win the go-ahead match at #3 singles – Larisa Kotok d. Viktoria Lorentzon (3-6 6-1 6-2) and seal the match clinching point at #1 singles – Maria Melo d. Caterina Assi (6-4 0-6 6-2). Niagara earns its first postseason win in a decade, with its last tournament win coming in 2015. The Purple Eagles are back in the semifinals for the second straight season and fourth time since 2021.

Rounding out first round action was No. 5 Siena beating No. 4 Rider 4-1. The Saints got to work quickly, taking the doubles point with identical 6-1 wins at the #1 and #2 positions. At the topflight, Laia Giralt and Manuela Gomez defeated Daniela Naves Anzaldo and Claire Brown, while the #2 spot win was completed by Andrea Vargas and Zaara Omar over Maria Buss and Chloe Monachelli. Siena would take the first singles match of the afternoon, when Manuela Gomez defeated Claire Brown, 6-4 7-5 at #4. Riders lone point in the match was secured by Chloe Monachelli at the #5 position, when she beat Reegan Mullaney, 7-5 6-3. The Saints took the next two matches, clinching the first round win with victories at #1 and #6. The topflight win for Siena was won by Laia Giralt, 6-0 6-2, over Laila Fishman, while the #6 position win was achieved by Madeline De Faber-Schumacher, 4-6 6-4 6-2, over Elle Catanzarite. Siena advances to its ninth consecutive semifinal dating back to 2016.
 
The 2025 MAAC Women's Tennis Championship semifinal round will take place tomorrow, Saturday April 26 with Siena meeting No. 1 Quinnipiac and Niagara facing No. 2 Fairfield.
