Iona and Siena Notch Wins in the Second Round of the 2025 MAAC Women’s Lacrosse Championship

EDISON, NJ (Apr. 27, 2025) – No. 3 Siena College and No. 4 Iona University protected its respective home fields on Sunday afternoon, each earning second round wins in 2025 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Women’s Lacrosse Championship action. The Saints clipped No. 7 Quinnipiac University, 15-9 and the Gaels handled No. 8 Rider University, 15-7.

A dominate showing in the second half propelled Siena back into the semifinals round. Leading by two goals at the half, the Saints broke open the contest by scoring four straight goals to start the second half and by outscoring the Bobcats 8-4 in total in the second half.
 
Siena Notes and Notables
  • A trio of Saints were hat trick scorers.
  • Leading Siena in scoring was Kelly Logue who scored 6 points, on three goals and three assists in the win.
  • Koehler Nieman tallied three goals, all coming in the second half and added two ground balls.
  • The last of the hat trick earners was Olivia Nicholson, who also scooped up a ground ball and won one draw control.
  • Elizabeth Wamp was the Saints final multi-goal scorer, logging two tallies in the victory.
  • Cassidy Bonura was the team leader in draw controls, with a game-high of eight.
  • Making the start in net was McAllister Salter who made 10 saves and got the decision.
  • Siena was on the attack in the meeting, outshooting Quinnipiac to the tune of a 33-26 shot advantage, including 21-19 shots on target.
  • Siena also held a 14-13 edge in draws.
  • The Saints advance to the MAAC semifinals round for the sixth consecutive time dating back to 2019.
  • Siena also extended its winning streak to seven games, the current longest active streak in the MAAC.
 
Quinnipiac Notes and Notables
  • EllaGrace Delmond led the Bobcats with a hat trick, two ground balls, two draw controls, and one caused turnover.
  • Adding two goals apiece were Mia Delmond and Abby Wise.
  • The duo also led the team with three ground balls each.
  • Sophia Coan had seven draw controls to lead the Bobcats. 
  • Quinnipiac held slim edges in ground balls (19-18).

The Gaels secured their first MAAC Championship win in program history, defeating Rider 15-7, one round after Rider achieve the same feat. Iona never trailed in the win, and the Gaels used two separate runs to garner the win. In the first half, Iona jumped out to a 6-1 run to start the game. The run included a five-goal rally from the 6:10 mark of the first quarter through the 8:49 mark of the second period. In the second half, Iona scored six straight goals from the midpoint of the third quarter to the midpoint of the fourth period to put away the Broncs.
 
Iona Notes and Notables
  • The do it all midfielder, Kira Varada, led the Gaels in points, goals, ground balls, caused turnovers, and draw controls.
  • She compiled seven points, five goals, two assists, six ground balls, six caused turnovers, and seven draw controls.
  • Kacie Scarduzio matched Varada with seven points of her own, logging two goals and a team-high five assists.
  • Jocelyn Smith also had a hat trick and added one assist.
  • Calen Norton was the fourth Gael to record two or more goals.
  • In goal for Iona was Ava Giugliano who made 10 saves and scooped up three ground balls.
  • The Gaels placed 23 out of their 27 shots on target.
  • Iona held an advantage in ground balls (16-12).
 
Rider Notes and Notables
  • Rider was led offensively by the duo of Katie Walsh and Selena Carrington, who each scored a pair of goals apiece.
  • Marissa Ross was the team leader in draw controls, winning a game-high nine draws.
  • Rider edged Iona in the draw circle 13-12.
 
The 2025 MAAC Women's Lacrosse Championship will resume with the semifinal round on Friday, May 2. No. 1 Mount St. Mary’s will host No. 4 Iona at noon, followed by No. 2 Fairfield taking on No. 3 Siena at 4:00 p.m. Both semifinal games and the championship will be hosted by Mount St. Mary’s in Emmitsburg, Maryland.
