Four Teams Remain After Quarterfinals of 2025 MAAC Softball Championship

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (May 8, 2025) - The 2025 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Softball Championship continued Thursday with the quarterfinal round. Two teams were eliminated and four will go on to the semifinal round on May 9th. No. 6 Rider picked up their third win of the championship by pushing past No. 2 Fairfield. Top-seeded Marist pushed past Siena, 2-0 to secure their spot in the next round and Fairfield fought to stay alive by winning the battle against No. 3 Iona. Marist and Rider face off in the first game of tomorrow’s semifinals and Fairfield takes on Siena in the elimination game at 12:30pm.

In the first double-elimination game of the Championship, the Iona University Gaels used a four-run third inning to blank Canisius 4-0 on Wednesday. After both teams were held scoreless through two innings, the Gaels erupted in the bottom of the third with RBI singles from Madison Campeau and Marylou Piazza, followed by a three-run homer from Brianna Fischer. Hailey Guerrero added a solo shot later in the frame to cap the scoring. Canisius tallied three hits across seven innings, with Johel collecting two of them. Iona's defense stayed sharp, stranding five Canisius baserunners and turning in clean innings behind strong pitching. Liv Herrington came in for Canisius after the outburst and kept the Gaels at bay for the remainder of the game.

A three-run fifth inning proved to be the difference as sixth seed Rider upset No. 2 Fairfield, 3–0, in a tightly contested matchup in Game 6. Both teams were held scoreless through four innings as pitchers dominated early, but the Broncs broke through in the fifth. After a single and a walk, Shelby Dyer delivered an RBI single and advanced on an error, followed by a clutch two-run double from Kristyn Gardner to give Rider a 3–0 lead. Fairfield threatened with baserunners in the second and seventh but couldn't crack the scoreboard. Kendall Reda-Fehsal and Kiersten Buchanan each recorded hits for Rider, while Dyer and Gardner came up big with timely offense. The Broncs’ pitching staff helped seal the shutout win. Rider improves behind solid execution and a dominant performance on the mound to take on No. 1 Marist in Game 9.

Backed by a dominant pitching performance and timely hitting, top-seeded Marist University earned a 2–0 win over Siena College. The Red Foxes opened the scoring in the third inning when Ronni Howard came around to score on an RBI single by Haley Ahr. Ahr added insurance in the sixth with a solo home run to center, extending Marist’s lead to two. Siena’s offense was limited to just three hits on the day, but Gianna DiMeglio and McKenzie Swinson provided the sparks for the Saints with singles. Marist’s defense held firm, stranding multiple Siena runners on base. On the mound, the Red Foxes kept Siena off balance throughout. Kiley Myers recorded eight strikeouts and allowed no walks. Siena’s Eimont tallied four strike out on the day for the Saints. With the win, Marist improves to the semifinal to face Rider University.

Fairfield staged a thrilling comeback to defeat Iona 9–7 after trailing 6–4 in the second inning. Fairfield started the game with a four-RBI homer from Faith Camilleri in the first ,but Iona responded and exploded for six runs in the top of the second, capped by a two-run homer from Hailey Guerrero. Fairfield would not be denied as the Stags tied the game in the fourth with clutch hitting from Morgan Sylvestre. In the sixth, Fairfield plated three more, including a go-ahead RBI bunt from Delaney Whieldon, capitalizing on a key error to take the lead for good. Despite a solo homer from Brianna Fischer, Iona couldn’t recover as Fairfield’s bullpen held firm down the stretch to the end. The Stags take on Siena in tomorrow’s elimination game at 12:30pm.
 
 
The 2025 MAAC Softball Championship is an eight-team single and double elimination championship taking place between May 6-10, 2025. Games 1 and 2 will be single elimination and games 3-12 will be double elimination. The championship will be hosted by the highest seed.
