WEST WINDSOR, NJ (Apr. 22, 2023) – No. 1 Quinnipiac University and No. 2 Fairfield University both earned semifinal round wins on Saturday afternoon and will meet in the title match of the 2023 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Women’s Tennis Championship at Mercer County Park Tennis Center in West Windsor, New Jersey. The Bobcats beat No. 4 Mount St. Mary’s University 4-0, and the Stags held off a furious comeback attempt to edge No. 3 Siena College 4-3. This is a rematch of last year’s championship final and marks the fourth time the two sides will vie for the league trophy.

Top seeded Quinnipiac earned a shutout win over No. 4 Mount St. Mary’s to start the semifinals. The Bobcats got the afternoon rolling by snagging the doubles point with a pair of wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 flights. At No. 3 doubles, Claire Koscielski and Vera Sekerina were victorious over Shirley Liang and Victoria Papadopoulou (6-1). Then, in the No. 2 spot, the duo of Jordan Bradley and Nikole Lisovyy got by Adriana Barney and Ana Alvarez-Storni (6-4) to give the defending champs a 1-0 lead. Quinnipiac would go on to secure the next three points in singles to gain the shutout. Bradley got the first singles point for the Bobcats at the No. 5 spot, winning (6-2, 6-3). Kamilla Nella topped Adriana Barney (7-5, 6-1) in the No. 3 spot for the third Quinnipiac point of the match. At the No. 6 spot, Lisovyy beat Alvarez-Storni (6-2, 7-5) for the fourth and final point. This will be the Bobcats’ ninth consecutive trip into the championship title match, having advanced to the MAAC final every season since joining the league. Quinnipiac will look to win its program’s seventh total MAAC tournament, having claimed the trophy last year and in five consecutive seasons from 2014 to 2018.

Second seeded Fairfield took down No. 3 Siena 4-3 in the second semifinal of the day, holding off the Saints late comeback. The Stags grabbed the doubles point by way of victories at the No. 2 pairing of Francesca Karman and Lize-Alet Morkel over Reegan Mullaney and Maanya (6-2) and at the No. 3 spot, with Laina Campos and Lucie Tuttle defeating Emma Boggiali and Laia Giralt (6-3), respectively. In singles, Katarina Plumtree defeated Maanya Viswanath (6-2, 6-1) at the No. 4 position to give Fairfield the 2-0 edge. At the No. 6 spot, Karman took down Madeline De Faber-Schumacher (6-2, 6-2), extending Fairfield’s lead to 3-0. Siena’s comeback attempt would start at No. 3 singles, when Alexa Wilson defeated Sarah Liu (6-3, 1-6, 6-1) to cut the deficit to 3-1. Then, Giralt beat Morkel (7-6, 6-3) at the No. 2 singles position, to make the match 3-2. The rally continued for the Saints at the conclusion of No. 1 singles with Meagan Brown taking down Paulina Bakaite (6-2, 3-6, 6-4), tying the match at 3-3. The decider came at No. 5 singles, in which Fairfield’s Aina March claimed a victory over Emma Boggiali (7-6 (5), 0-6, 6-2) to give the Stags a tournament victory over the Saints for the second consecutive year. This will be Fairfield’s second straight appearance in the title match and third trip over the past four seasons. The most successful women’s program in league history, the Stags are seeking their 11th MAAC title tomorrow, last winning the 2019 championship.
The 2023 MAAC Women's Tennis Championship final will take place tomorrow, Sunday April 23 at 2:00 p.m. with the winner earning the league’s automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
