AUSTIN, TX - Iona University men's outdoor track senior Mael Gouyette completed his collegiate career with a Second Team All-American performance in the 1500-meter semifinal event at the NCAA Championships at the University of Texas' Myers Stadium.
Gouyette finished seventh in the first heat of the 1,500-meter and posted a time of 3:40.48. As the top five in each of the two heats automatically qualified for the final, he stood just .12 seconds shy of one of the two time qualifying spots and finished 14th overall. The 3:40.48 is a career best time for Gouyette, topping his previous time by .01 seconds, set last July 4 at Stadium Sottevillais 76 in Sotteville-lès-Rouen, France, at the Meeting International de Sotteville. Gouyette's time is also a program record while wearing an Iona singlet, besting Gael Hall of Famer Tim Bayley's 3:41.66 set at the Stanford Invitational in 2006. Former teammate and current Iona assistant coach Liam Dee posted a 3:40.30 while running unattached as a red shirt at the Swarthmore Final Qualifier on May 15, 2017.
Gouyette finished his two-year tenure in New Rochelle with an impressive resume. He holds the fastest outdoor mile time, 4:01.83, is one of six runners to post a sub-4 minute indoor mile, ranks in the top 10 in the indoor 800-meter event and one of 15 runners in school history to run a sub-8-minute indoor 3,000-meters. Gouyette was a two-time MAAC Champion in the 2023 outdoor 5k and 2022 indoor distance medley relay. He was also a two-time MAAC silver medalist to earn four medals in his four track championship appearances, while also earning All-MAAC honors with his sixth place finish in the MAAC Cross Country Championship this past fall.
The performance at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships concludes the 2022-23 competition season for the Iona University Athletics Department.
