Iona’s Sweeney and Sacred Heart’s Fitzgerald Named Bob McCloskey Insurance MAAC Student-Athletes of the Week

Male Student-Athlete of the Week
JW Fitzgerald, Sacred Heart, Baseball
Sr. / Westport, CT, Staples

The Pioneers starting center fielder, Fitzgerald is currently second on the team with a .292 batting average with 14 hits across 48 at bats. He has a pair of doubles to his credit and has driven in two runs and is 5-of-6 in stolen base opportunities. In a pair of appearances last week, JW finished 3-of-8 at the plate in road games at Yale and Quinnipiac.

Female Student-Athlete of the Week
Lauren Sweeney, Iona, Women’s Lacrosse
Sr. / Derry, NH, Pinkerton

After earning the win over Mercyhurst, Lauren Sweeney etched her name into the record books for the Iona Gaels women’s lacrosse team, securing her 18th career victory—the most ever by a goalkeeper in program history. Adding to her historic run, Sweeney also reached an impressive personal milestone, recording her 350th career save in a matchup against Austin Peay. With the mark, she becomes just the fourth goalkeeper in Iona history to reach that plateau, further cementing her legacy as a cornerstone of the Gaels’ defense.
