EDISON, NJ (June 7, 2023) – Quinnipiac University, Fairfield University, and Iona University have been announced as the winners of the inaugural 2022-23 Richard J. Ensor, Esq. Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Commissioner’s Cup, announced by the league today.

Quinnipiac has secured the Overall Commissioner’s Cup and a share of the Women’s Commissioner’s Cup, while Iona captured the Men’s Commissioner’s and Fairfield was co-champions of the Women’s Commissioner’s Cup.

“This was a tremendous year of competition for the Richard J. Ensor, Esq. Commissioner's Cup and I cannot recall a closer finish,” noted retiring Commissioner Rich Ensor. “I was surprised and honored when the MAAC Council of Presidents informed me of the naming of the Cup in my recognition for my 35 years of service to the MAAC. I congratulate the Quinnipiac University student-athletes, coaches and administrators on achieving such a broad array of success this past season and I am reminded of the countless hours of preparation by all that led to them securing their first ever Overall Cup. I would also like to congratulate Iona University for winning its sixth Men’s Cup and Fairfield University on winning its 11th Women’s Cup.”

“I would like to congratulate the student-athletes, coaches and administrators at Quinnipiac, Fairfield and Iona for winning the 2022-23 Richard J. Ensor, Esq. Commissioner’s Cup,” said MAAC Commissioner Travis Tellitocci. “This award recognizes overall athletics excellence in the conference and is a testament to the great success that was achieved over the past season by each school.”

The Richard J. Ensor, Esq. MAAC Commissioner’s Cup is awarded annually as a symbol of overall excellence in athletics in the 23 championships conducted within the MAAC. Only the scores from Men’s & Women’s Basketball, plus the top six men’s and top six women’s scores are used to determine an institution’s total points. On May 1, 2023, the MAAC Council of Presidents approved the renaming of the MAAC Commissioner’s Cup after retiring MAAC Commissioner Richard J. Ensor, Esq., in honor of his legacy and exemplary service to intercollegiate athletics.

Quinnipiac won its fourth total Commissioner’s Cup, the program’s first ever overall cup and second women’s cup. The Bobcats have previously won the women’s cup in 2016-17 and a men’s cup in 2018-19. During the 2022-23 academic year, Quinnipiac had one of the most successful seasons in conference history, nearly sweeping the fall with MAAC Championships in women's cross country, women's soccer, men's soccer, and volleyball. The Bobcats also added MAAC Championships in women's golf for the third consecutive year and in women's tennis for the second straight season. Quinnipiac claimed MAAC Regular Season titles in both men’s and women’s soccer, and both men’s and women’s tennis.

“Winning the Richard J. Ensor, Esq. Commissioner's Cup is a testament to the dedication and commitment from our entire department on a daily basis,” said Greg Amodio, Quinnipiac Director of Athletics. “We have high expectations for all our programs here at Quinnipiac, and capturing our first-ever Commissioner’s Cup is a great exclamation point to our historic season. I’d like to congratulate all our student-athletes, coaches and staff members who helped contribute to this wonderful accomplishment. Our department is well-positioned to continue to build on this success moving forward in 2023-24 and beyond. On behalf of Bobcat Nation, we’d also like to thank retiring Commissioner Rich Ensor for his continued leadership at the conference level. The MAAC has afforded its student-athletes incredible opportunities year in and year out since Ensor’s arrival in 1988.”

“We are very proud to have earned the title of Women’s Co-Champions in the 2022-23 Richard J. Ensor, Esq. Commissioner's Cup,” added Sarah Fraser, Quinnipiac Deputy Director of Athletics/SWA. “Our women’s programs here at QU enjoyed countless individual and team accomplishments during the past season, which was highlighted by MAAC Championships in women’s soccer, volleyball, cross country, golf, and tennis.  We’re thrilled with this acknowledgement of their successes and their commitment to excellence, and look forward to achieving new milestones moving forward.”

Iona was crowned as the men’s champion for the sixth time in program history, its first trophy since 2019-20. In total, the Gaels have won seven MAAC Commissioner’s Cups, winning one overall cup following the 2010-11 season in addition to their six men’s cups. Iona swept men’s basketball in 2022-23, winning the MAAC Championship and MAAC Regular Season titles. The Gaels also took home their NCAA record, 32nd men’s cross country championship during the season.

“We are extremely proud of our men’s programs combining to win the Men’s MAAC Commissioner’s Cup this year,” said Matthew Glovaski, Iona Director of Athletics. “It is a true testament to all of the work, both on and off their respective competitive fields, that all of our student-athletes, coaches and support staff put in all year long. All of us in the Iona community and in Gael Nation are incredibly happy to share in the success that the Maroon & Gold have enjoyed during the 2022-23 season and look forward to seeing what our Gaels can continue accomplish in the future!”

For the second straight season and third time in the past four years, Fairfield has taken home the women’s title. The 2022-23 women’s cup was the program’s 11th, which ties them with Marist for the most among current MAAC members, and it was the Stags 18th total MAAC Commissioner’s Cup for the program, having previously earned four overall cups and three men’s cups. This season, Fairfield’s women’s programs captured MAAC Championships in swimming & diving, and lacrosse, while securing MAAC Regular Season crowns in lacrosse, volleyball and soccer.

“Our position in the 2022-23 Commissioner’s Cup standings is a reflection of the hard work and dedication of many people, and I am very proud of everybody involved for their contributions to our continued growth and success,” said Fairfield University Director of Athletics Paul Schlickmann. “Our competitive success this year is highlighted by MAAC Championship seasons for Women’s Swimming & Diving and Women’s Lacrosse as well as regular season titles from Volleyball, Women’s Soccer, Men’s Tennis and Baseball. But truly, this honor is shared by the student-athletes, coaches and staff from all 20 of our programs. All Fairfield Stags are a part of building and maintaining our culture, competing every play, every day and celebrating successes as one team and one family.”
